At least 11 people were killed and 39 others sustained injuries after a speeding passenger coach struck a divider and flipped over in southern Punjab's Rajanpur district on Wednesday. The crash took place on the Indus Highway near the Sitara Pump area in Bangla Hidyat.
The bus had been travelling north from Karachi towards Dera Ghazi Khan. Rescue 1122 personnel confirmed that eight victims died immediately at the scene of the crash, while three more passed away shortly after reaching medical facilities. The deceased include women and children.
Crash on Under-Construction Highway
Emergency workers and local police arrived promptly to cut through the mangled vehicle and rescue trapped passengers. Officials noted that the section of the Indus Highway where the coach overturned was undergoing active road construction at the time.
Witness statements provided to rescue teams suggest that excessive speed was the primary factor behind the collision. The driver lost control of the vehicle before colliding directly with the central divider, causing the bus to roll onto its side.
Emergency Response and Medical Transfers
Authorities transferred the bodies and the wounded to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Rajanpur, where administrators declared a state of emergency. Paramedics treated 12 passengers with minor cuts and bruises directly at the scene, while 19 others were taken to nearby medical centres.
Hospital officials confirmed that 13 injured passengers remain in precarious condition. Due to the severe nature of their trauma, four critical patients were subsequently referred to specialized medical facilities in Rahim Yar Khan for urgent intervention.
