Section 144 imposed in South Waziristan has restricted public movement, closed markets and limited travel on several main routes in both Upper and Lower South Waziristan. The district administrations of the two districts issued separate notifications on Friday evening, covering Saturday, and said the measures were taken because of security concerns and the movement of logistical supplies for security forces.
What the orders cover in Lower South Waziristan
Lower South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Musarrat Zaman issued the notification for the lower district. It said the order was enforced in Wana Bazaar, the Wana Bypass and several other localities. Movement was prohibited along routes passing through Wana, Tiarza Gate, Karab Kot, Tanai, Azizabad Chowk and Dargai Bridge, and entry onto the roads linking Gul Kach with Toi Khullah and Tanai was strictly banned.
Upper South Waziristan and travel rules
Upper South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali issued a separate notification covering Servekai and Sararogha tehsils and adjoining areas, and ordered the closure of markets and commercial centres there. Entry was barred on routes leading to Ladha, Makeen, Sararogha, Nazar Khel, Madi Jan, Sheen Warsak, Jandola, Barwand, Asman Manza and Torwam, among others. Under both orders, travel on restricted roads is allowed only in emergencies, with prior authorisation from police or security forces. In Upper South Waziristan, identity documents must also be verified.
Polio workers and vaccination teams are allowed to move through the affected areas once they establish their identities. Motorists must stop at least 50 metres away on seeing security forces, and in Upper South Waziristan all occupants must get out of the vehicle. Both administrations urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid unnecessary travel on the restricted routes.
Why the restrictions were ordered
The district administrations said the restrictions were introduced for security reasons, particularly to allow logistical supplies for security forces to move safely. Section 144 imposed in South Waziristan rests on a provision that empowers district administrations to restrict certain activities and public movement in specified circumstances. The latest orders come amid heightened security concerns in the two districts.
The notifications warned that people who violate the restrictions will be held responsible under the applicable law. Anyone who needs to travel on the listed roads must first seek permission from the relevant authorities.
