The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police now have a new leave policy that makes one rest day every week compulsory for all officers and personnel. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry approved the Leave Policy 2026, and a force spokesperson said it would apply immediately across every branch of Islamabad Police.
The spokesperson said the policy was issued on the IGP's special instructions. It also sets out clearly who may approve casual, earned, medical and other kinds of leave, a change meant to make the process simpler for the force's rank and file.
Weekly rest day and who approves leave
The weekly rest day is counted separately from other leave, so it does not come out of an officer's regular leave. Under the new rules, Station House Officers, who head police stations, can approve up to three days of casual leave for constables and head constables. Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) can approve up to five days for the same ranks.
Superintendents of Police (SPs) can grant up to three days of casual leave to staff from constable up to inspector. Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) can approve three days for SPs and station house officers. Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) may approve every type of leave for staff from constable to inspector, while leave requests from DIGs and SSPs must be signed off by the IGP.
Pilgrimage, marriage and exam leave
The policy allows 45 days of leave for Hajj and 21 days for Umrah and other religious pilgrimages. Male personnel are entitled to 10 days of marriage leave, while female officers and personnel get one month.
Officers appearing in the Central Superior Services (CSS) and Provincial Civil Services (PCS) examinations can take up to 20 days of leave, and up to 15 days for interviews. These two civil service exams are the main routes into senior federal and provincial government posts.
Postings away from home
Personnel serving away from their home districts become eligible for seven days of leave after 45 days of duty, and 14 days after 90 days. The policy also provides for medical leave based on individual health needs.
The revised rules allow more than 10 percent of a unit's or division's strength to go on casual leave at the same time. The spokesperson said the changes were drafted with the welfare of personnel and the need for discipline in mind.
