Nvidia is discussing whether to stand behind billions of dollars in borrowing for a Nvidia AI data center that cloud provider Nscale plans to build in West Virginia for Anthropic. In practice the chipmaker would cosign financing so Nscale can cover electricity and construction costs at a moment when investors are growing uneasy about the sheer size of AI infrastructure spending.
How the proposed backup would work
The structure under review is a residual-value guarantee. Reports say that if Nscale defaulted on construction payments, Nvidia would temporarily take control of the campus and help arrange a sale plus a new tenant. Until now, Nvidia’s support for cloud operators has mostly covered processor leases and purchases rather than the cost of putting buildings and power in place.
Anthropic’s contracts and Nscale’s listing push
Anthropic’s agreement with Nscale for the opening building alone is valued at $44.6 billion. That first structure is rated at 460 megawatts and is expected to run Nvidia’s forthcoming Vera Rubin processors. The companies are also negotiating a further package of about $45 billion for another building.
Nscale wants to list publicly at a valuation of as much as $35 billion, even as doubts persist about whether it can finish its ambitious slate of campuses. In August the firm had about 25,000 advanced AI chips in service—only a fraction of the nearly 500,000 it aims to field. Construction runoff at the West Virginia site has flooded neighbouring homes more than once; after months of talks, the project secured state certification in September. This month Microsoft withdrew from a planned Nscale location in England after grid power for that site slipped into the 2030s.
Why the chipmaker is deepening its stake
Nvidia has already become a major financial backer of the sector, having channelled close to $170 billion through investments and credit lines toward neoclouds and large customers. That total includes about $1 billion of convertible funding pledged to Nscale in September. A guarantee around this Nvidia AI data center project would tighten those ties and help protect a major outlet for Nvidia chips. Anthropic buys compute from several suppliers; one investor said Anthropic’s presence likely explains Nvidia’s interest in keeping the West Virginia work on track.
Neoclouds—firms that rent AI processing power without a cash-rich core business—have faced investor pressure. Shares of CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN each lost over 30 percent of their value during October, measured as of last week. Anthropic filed to go public this week, and Blackstone has cautioned that it may receive a below-investment-grade rating after listing. Such a rating would raise Anthropic’s borrowing costs and could leave it more dependent on stronger partners to back its debt.
Aasan alfaaz mein
Nvidia Nscale ke West Virginia campus ke loans ke peeche khare hone ki baat kar raha hai. Is se construction aur bijli ke kharche ke liye financing milna asaan ho sakta hai. Anthropic ne pehli building ke liye $44.6 billion ka contract diya hai. Agar ye guarantee final hui to chip maker apne customer ke project ko zinda rakhte hue apni chips ki demand bhi bachana chahta hai.
