The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the country’s central bank, has launched SMEConnect, a centralised digital portal meant to help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) seek financing from banks and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs)—specialised lenders that fund development and business growth.

Announced from Karachi, the move is part of the central bank’s push for an SME-friendly financial system. SMEConnect is designed as a single online gateway that links small businesses with lenders, with the aim of making applications more accessible, efficient and transparent across Pakistan.

How SMEConnect works

Through the portal, SME applicants can submit financing requests digitally and follow the status of those requests as they move. If an application is turned down, the system is meant to show the reasons for rejection, so owners are not left guessing.

After checks, applications are to be forwarded to the bank or DFI the applicant has chosen. A live dashboard will also give the SBP a full view of SME financing requests and their status. That dashboard is expected to show real-time figures on applications received, processed, approved, disbursed and rejected—both for each bank or DFI and for the sector as a whole.

What changes from 1 November 2026

From 1 November 2026, all SME finance applications must go through SMEConnect. Owners who still prefer to visit a branch will be guided by staff to file the request digitally on the portal. Those who start on a bank’s own website will be directed to SMEConnect instead.

The same date ends a separate rule, known as R-6 under the Prudential Regulations for Small & Medium Enterprise Financing, that had required banks and DFIs to let applicants apply digitally on their own systems. That requirement is being withdrawn once the new portal becomes the standard channel.

What banks and DFIs must do

The SBP has told banks and DFIs to place the SMEConnect link clearly on their websites and mobile apps, and to use their marketing channels to raise awareness. Lenders are expected to have these steps in place from 1 November 2026.

The central bank said the launch reflects its focus on financial inclusion, support for entrepreneurship, and a stronger SME financing setup that can back broader, more inclusive growth.
