Pakistan stock market fell again on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index closing 814.44 points lower at 165,151.64 points on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). The fall of 0.49 percent continued the bearish momentum from the previous session, when the index had already dropped on Monday. Investors who track the market should note that the decline was broad, with more companies losing value than gaining.

Tuesday's closing figures

The KSE-100 covers the 100 largest companies listed on the PSX. Trading volume in the ready market, where shares are traded for immediate delivery, rose to 446.842 million shares from 370.941 million a day earlier. The total value of shares traded eased slightly to Rs19.426 billion from Rs19.562 billion.

Market capitalisation, the combined market value of all listed shares, fell to Rs18.308 trillion from Rs18.427 trillion. Of the 499 companies that traded, 128 posted gains, 324 suffered losses and 47 remained unchanged. Cnergyico PK led the volume chart with 46.545 million shares, followed by Pak Refinery and K-Electric Ltd.

Among the top gainers, Khairpur Sugar Mills Limited rose Rs129.84 to close at Rs1,428.24, while Ismail Industries Limited advanced Rs31.55 to settle at Rs1,837.34. Such gains in a few stocks sat against a wider pattern of losses, with more companies falling than rising.

Monday's session and the wider picture

On Monday, the index closed at 165,966.09 points, down 453.63 points or 0.27 percent, from 166,419.72 points in the previous session. Of the companies that traded that day, 163 gained, 302 lost and 34 were unchanged. Pak Refinery led volume with 52.931 million shares, and traded value rose to Rs19.562 billion from Rs18.679 billion.

The closing figures do not name a single cause for the decline. In general, a run of falls means more investors are selling shares than buying them, and that pushes prices lower across many companies. Whether the Pakistan stock market keeps weakening will show in the next sessions, when the index either steadies or extends its losses.
