Pakistan will have to apply for a fresh EU GSP+ arrangement from January 2027, when the current framework expires in December 2026. Under a grace period, the existing arrangement will continue until December 2028, allowing the European Commission and the European Parliament time to finalise the new scheme. Official sources said Islamabad will formally apply once the new regulation comes into force on January 1, 2027.

What the grace period means

Official sources said any country, including current beneficiaries such as Pakistan, can apply once the new GSP+ regulation takes effect. Present beneficiaries have a two-year grace period running from January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2028. Officials said the revised GSP rules taking effect in 2027 mean Pakistan must address several priorities to keep its eligibility.

GSP+ is a European Union trade scheme that reduces import duties for eligible developing countries, on condition that they apply key international conventions on human rights, labour and the environment.

Lobbying and compliance

Official sources said Pakistan will need intensive lobbying and stronger capacity to meet strict compliance requirements for the next scheme. EU Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis met leaders of the Pakistan Textile Council in Karachi to discuss GSP+ and future trade relations. He stressed the need for effective implementation of existing international commitments if benefits are to continue.

Foreign Office stresses trade ties

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar stressed the importance of GSP+ to Pakistan's trade relations with the European Union. He made the remarks in a meeting with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly on September 21, according to a Foreign Office statement. Dar also called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy in the region and welcomed the EU's recognition of Pakistan's de-escalation efforts.

Aasan alfaaz mein

EU Pakistan ke liye ek tijarati suhoolat hai jo kuch saman par duties kam rakhti hai. Mojooda arrangement December 2028 tak jari rahega, is liye abhi koi foran tabdeeli nahi hai. Lekin Pakistan ko January 2027 se naye scheme ke liye apply karna hoga aur shartein poori karni hongi. Textile aur exporters ke liye yeh ahem mauqa hai.
