Punjab restores the historic college title
The GCU Lahore name change will see Government College University Lahore revert to Government College Lahore after the Punjab government moved six public higher-education institutions to drop the word University from their official titles. The step follows the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026. On 23 October the Punjab Higher Education Department notified vice chancellors and rectors to bring institutional names in line with that law.
The shift matters because the Lahore campus only took university status in 2002, after long years as Government College Lahore. Officials have framed the revision as a return to that older identity rather than a cut in what the institution does.
Which campuses are affected
Besides the Lahore college, the notice covers Government College Faisalabad, Government College for Women Faisalabad, Government College for Women Sialkot, Government Sadiq College Bahawalpur and Lahore College for Women. In each case the mandate for higher education is meant to stay the same; the legal name is what changes.
The GCU Lahore name change therefore sits inside a wider renaming of several public colleges, not a standalone decision for one campus.
History and unanswered paperwork questions
Government College opened on 1 January 1864 with nine students and later grew into a major centre of learning. It gained degree-awarding powers in 1997 and became a university in 2002. Its past is linked with figures such as educationist Dr G.W. Leitner, poet Allama Iqbal and physicist Dr Abdus Salam.
What remains unsettled is how current and past academic certificates will show the restored title. A legal rename needs matching paperwork so older and newer records do not clash. The department has told institutions to act under the Act but has not fixed a finish date.
Alumnus Nadeem Malek called the restoration “an excellent development,” saying many former students had wanted the old name back, and asked the government also to rebuild the college’s academic standing.

Aasan alfaaz mein
GCU Lahore ka official naam wapas Government College Lahore ho raha hai. Punjab sarkar ne University ka lafz kai public colleges ke naam se hata diya hai. Padhai aur degree wale kaam pehle jaisi rehne hain, sirf board aur papers par naam badlega. Certificates par naya naam kaise likha jayega, abhi clear nahi hai.
