Commissioner Sukkur Abid Saleem Qureshi on Saturday imposed a Sukkur hunting ban lasting 90 days on hunting, trapping, netting and illegal firing of wild birds across the division. The order applies in all three districts—Sukkur, Khairpur and Ghotki—and is meant to protect wildlife and curb illegal hunting of rare bird species.

What the order covers

A formal notification has been issued under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Cr.PC)—a public-order power used to restrict certain activities for a fixed period. Under that notice, the Sukkur hunting ban runs with effect from 28 October 2026.

The prohibited activities named in the order are hunting, trapping, netting and illegal firing directed at wild birds. The step is framed as wildlife protection rather than a seasonal sports regulation alone, with officials citing the need to stop illegal hunting of rare species.

Penalties and enforcement

According to the notification, people who breach the ban can face legal action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which deals with disobedience of an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant. Concerned police officers have been authorised to register complaints where violations occur.

Enforcement therefore rests with local police alongside the commissioner’s Section 144 framework. Residents and visitors in the three districts should treat trapping and netting of wild birds as offences during the ban period, not only open shooting.

Why officials say the curb was needed

The commissioner’s stated objective is to ensure the protection of wildlife, the survival of rare bird species and the prevention of illegal hunting. The Sukkur hunting ban is time-bound at 90 days from the notified start date, so the immediate focus is compliance through the winter period covered by the order.

Anyone unsure whether a particular activity is allowed should treat the listed methods—hunting, trapping, netting and illegal firing of wild birds—as off-limits in Sukkur, Khairpur and Ghotki until the 90-day window ends, unless a later official order changes the position.
