Danyal Chaudhry Calls for Urgent Action on Terrorism in KP

Terrorism in KPK Pakistan has grown worse over several years, and the provincial government has not done enough to counter it, federal parliamentary secretary Danyal Chaudhry said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House in Islamabad, he called for urgent action and said the federal government had imposed governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) because of rising violence and the deaths of security personnel.

Why the government stepped in

Chaudhry said the government kept talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) going until the last moment, in an effort to settle the matter through dialogue. Governor's rule, under which a governor appointed by the federal government runs the province instead of an elected provincial government, is the option a democratic government least wants, he said. He argued that the losses among security forces and the rise in terrorism left no real choice. He added that PTI had been pressed several times to state its position on militancy, and that its replies had not been satisfactory.

Chaudhry said members of law enforcement agencies are being killed every day in the campaign against militancy. He described the anguish of families, widows and children left without a parent, who keep asking when the losses will end. He also said the bodies of the fallen, wrapped in the national flag, were reaching Rawalpindi and other towns each day. In his view, talks with militants and a lenient approach had made the situation worse.

Questions over Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Balochistan

Chaudhry also questioned Maulana Fazlur Rehman, recalling that PTI had earlier made allegations against him, including claims about permits, land tied to martyrs, training camps and backing for militants. He asked whether those accusations had been wrong when they were made, or whether the cleric's present support for the party was in error. He cited earlier remarks attributed to the cleric, including a 2012 description of PTI and a 2021 claim about foreign funding for the party. He said a sudden shift in the cleric's position after two decades pointed to a personal or political motive.

He also dismissed claims of a deal over mines and minerals as baseless. Governor's rule, he said, was imposed because of the martyrs, rising terrorism and national security. He contrasted KP with Balochistan, arguing that the Balochistan government had stood with the federal state in its fight against militancy, while the KP government's approach was shaped by its own political interests. These are political criticisms from a government official, and the earlier statements he quoted are presented as his account, not as independently confirmed facts.

Chaudhry said Maulana Fazlur Rehman and his party would have to answer these questions, either by explaining their earlier statements or by clarifying their current stance. He added that the families of the fallen want answers as soon as possible. The remarks did not outline a new security plan or timetable, so the immediate steps on terrorism in KPK Pakistan remain unclear from his comments.
