Brent crude rose above $110 a barrel as tensions in the Middle East escalated and attacks on oil tankers added to concern about global energy supplies. At the time of writing, Brent was trading near $111.80, about 2.78 percent higher, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the main American benchmark, climbed to $99.41, a gain of roughly 2.33 percent. Brent is the international reference price for crude oil, and WTI is its American counterpart.

The Strait of Hormuz at the centre of the concern

The price move reflects growing uncertainty over oil shipments leaving the Persian Gulf, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. That narrow sea passage is a critical route for global energy trade, and recent tanker attacks have disrupted traffic through the region. Iran has stepped up its counterattacks around the strait. It warned that vessels breaking its restrictions could be prevented from passing, and said any new US attack would bring retaliation against American bases and regional allies.

Reports say two vessels sank near the waterway on October 14 after being struck by projectiles in separate incidents. The reports point to a growing danger for ships moving through the area.

A second chokepoint in the Red Sea

Yemen has intensified attacks on US and Saudi assets in the region, according to reports. That widens the risk around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The danger now reaches a second key shipping route, alongside the Gulf. Any disruption on these routes tends to raise uncertainty for buyers, sellers and shipping companies alike.

What happens next

Oil prices are likely to keep reacting to news from both waterways, since both are central to global energy trade. Markets will watch whether further attacks on tankers occur and whether Iran acts on its warnings. Readers should follow confirmed statements from governments and shipping authorities as the situation develops.
