Hub Power Company has paused its proposed Hubco data center project, pointing to elevated electricity tariffs, rising technology equipment expenses, and ambiguous commercial returns. The utility disclosed its stance following an annual general meeting, deciding to re-examine the feasibility of building out large-scale computing infrastructure.

Scale and infrastructure hurdles

Unlike traditional market entrants that pilot digital infrastructure through modest setups between 5MW and 10MW, the independent power producer aims for a massive 100MW installation right from inception. However, company leadership indicated that building such substantial capacity requires dedicated technological zones supplied by several independent transmission connections to ensure stability.

Because of persistent Hubco power costs and broader tech expenditure, the utility chose not to proceed without structural guarantees. Officials have not shared a revised timeline, capital expenditure estimates, or an updated business blueprint for the venture.

Competitive shifts in local digital hosting

Even as the power producer halts its initiative, other corporate groups are progressing with local cloud and computing investments. Gul Ahmed Energy Group's Quantum Global Data Centre has entered an agreement with Huawei Pakistan to build facilities, while Mari Energies-supported Sky47 initiated its Karakoram-01 site designed for artificial intelligence workloads. In addition, a consortium involving United Bank Limited, Indus DC REIT, and Indus Cloud is advancing domestic digital hosting capacity.

Hubco continues to assess the overall economic viability of large-scale computing spaces before allocating fresh capital.
