The Pharmacy Services and Drug Control Wing of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Health Department has warned pharmacists not to obtain or hold multiple drug sale licences against a single professional registration.

In a public and professional advisory issued in Islamabad on 1 November, the wing said the practice is illegal and professionally unacceptable. It stated that each pharmacist must hold and utilise only one drug sale licence.

What the advisory requires

Official sources said the department advised all licence applicants to ensure full disclosure, provide accurate information, and strictly comply with applicable laws and regulations when applying. A drug sale licence is the official permission needed to sell medicines through a pharmacy outlet; professional registration is the credential that confirms a person is qualified as a pharmacist.

The rule, as framed by the ICT wing, ties one licence to one registration. Holding several licences under the same registration was described as outside the law and outside accepted professional conduct.

Enforcement and professional standards

The department warned that any violation would invite appropriate legal and regulatory action. It did not spell out specific penalties in the advisory summary available, but made clear that non-compliance would not be treated as a minor paperwork issue.

Pharmacy professionals were also urged to uphold ethical standards, protect the dignity of the profession, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations. The message links licensing discipline to public trust in how medicines are sold in the capital.

What happens next

Pharmacists and applicants in ICT are expected to review existing arrangements and applications so that only one drug sale licence sits against each professional registration. Those preparing new applications were told to disclose information fully and accurately and to follow the rules already in force.

Anyone unsure about their current status would need to check with the Pharmacy Services and Drug Control Wing or the ICT Health Department’s licensing process, as the advisory itself focuses on the one-licence rule and the warning of action for breaches.
