The Lahore High Court issued an LHC order on Noreen Niazi on Monday directing authorities to arrange a meeting between her and her two daughters at the jail at 10am on Tuesday, 3 November. Justice Abher Gul Khan passed the direction while hearing a petition by Sakina and Shahraiz that challenges the extension of detention orders against sisters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder.
What the court directed
Under the LHC order on Noreen Niazi, the two daughters are to be allowed to meet their mother for one hour. The court asked their counsel to submit an application to the Lahore deputy commissioner, who was told to arrange the Tuesday meeting in response to that request.
The court also summoned the Lahore deputy commissioner in person on 4 November to explain the extensions in the detention orders of Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan. Separately, the hearing on a challenge to the extension of Aleema Khan’s detention was adjourned until next week.
Hospital stay and earlier visit
On the court’s direction, the home secretary submitted a report. Counsel for the Punjab government told the court that Noreen Niazi had been taken to hospital for medical treatment and was later shifted back to jail on doctors’ advice.
The same counsel said she had already been allowed to meet her daughter Hajra Niazi on 29 October during that hospital stay. The fresh LHC order on Noreen Niazi therefore sits alongside that earlier contact and the still-pending questions over how detention orders for her and related family members have been extended.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- 29 October: During a hospital stay, Noreen Niazi was allowed to meet her daughter Hajra Niazi, according to Punjab government counsel.
- 2 November (Monday): Justice Abher Gul Khan ordered a one-hour jail meeting with her two daughters at 10am the next day and summoned Lahore’s deputy commissioner for 4 November over detention extensions for Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan.
- 3 November (Tuesday): Meeting between Noreen Niazi and her two daughters is to take place at the jail at 10am, if arranged as directed.
- 4 November: Lahore deputy commissioner is to appear in person to explain the detention-order extensions.
- Next week: Hearing on the challenge to Aleema Khan’s detention extension stands adjourned until then.
What comes next
Attention now turns to whether the Tuesday visit goes ahead as ordered and to the deputy commissioner’s explanation on 4 November. The adjourned Aleema Khan matter will return to the court next week. Together, those steps will show how authorities respond to the LHC order on Noreen Niazi and to the wider petitions against detention extensions.
