Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir on Monday received a senior Chinese party official at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi for talks on evolving regional and international security dynamics and bilateral relations, according to the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
ISPR identified the visitor as Liu Haixing, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee (IDCPC), the body that handles the party’s external contacts. Munir holds the dual role of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of the Army Staff, and holds the rank of Field Marshal.
What the two sides discussed
Beyond topics of mutual interest, ISPR said both sides voiced a shared resolve to further strengthen the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between Pakistan and China. Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir pointed to the historic, time-tested bond and stressed sustained high-level engagement, stronger institutional links and wider cooperation where interests align.
Liu Haixing, ISPR added, praised Pakistan’s role in regional peace and stability and voiced confidence that the longstanding strategic partnership would advance further. The exchange framed China-Pakistan security cooperation as part of a broader diplomatic and institutional relationship rather than a one-off courtesy call.
Dar’s parallel meeting in Islamabad
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met the IDCPC minister in Islamabad. The Foreign Office (FO) said the Chinese visitor conveyed greetings from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, which Dar warmly returned. Dar also sent warm greetings to President Xi Jinping on behalf of Pakistan’s leadership and restated Islamabad’s commitment to deepening the All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership with Beijing.
The FO said the two sides talked about expanding cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges, and expressed resolve to keep close coordination and sustain positive momentum in bilateral relations.
Timeline: what has happened so far
- Recently: Pakistan and China agreed to operationalise a green channel at the Sost-Khunjerab border for agricultural and allied products, aimed at easing bilateral trade. Khunjerab Pass links Gilgit-Baltistan with China’s Xinjiang region and stands about 15,500 feet above sea level as the highest paved international border crossing.
- Last week: The two countries launched the China-Pakistan Information Corridor (CPIC), organised around four pillars: media; business and enterprises; think tanks; and culture and tourism.
- Monday: Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir met Liu Haixing at GHQ in Rawalpindi; Dar held a parallel bilateral meeting with the same visitor in Islamabad.
Pakistan and China have long described their ties as a strategic partnership built on mutual trust, economic cooperation and regional connectivity, with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) often cited as a flagship development link across trade, energy, defence, infrastructure and related fields.
