A Miranshah police officer martyred on Tuesday was additional station house officer (SHO) Meera Khan, who was killed in firing by unidentified individuals while on duty near the Miranshah Bypass Road in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), police said. In Pakistani usage, martyred means killed in the line of duty.

The district police officer (DPO) said Khan was targeted while on duty and suffered multiple bullet wounds before he died.

What the police said

DPO Sajjad Hussain confirmed the details and said Khan had succumbed to his injuries. Police said a search operation was launched in the area after the firing to trace the attackers. An investigation has also been opened into the circumstances of the incident, and police have not yet identified those responsible.

The DPO said police morale remained high and that officers were determined to track down Khan's attackers.

A difficult security picture in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

KP has faced terrorist attacks and security challenges for a long time, and police personnel have been among the targets. A recent report from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), a body that tracks security data, said violence-linked fatalities across Pakistan rose by 83 per cent in the third quarter of 2026. The rise reversed a decline seen in the first and second quarters.

According to the same report, Balochistan and KP remained the main centres of violence, together accounting for 98 per cent of fatalities in the period. Balochistan recorded 829 deaths, nearly 59 per cent of the national total, while KP recorded 556, more than 39 per cent.

Other recent attacks on police have been reported in the province. On Oct 7, seven policemen were injured when terrorists attacked a police checkpost in Kohat, and an official said the attack was repulsed and the injured were safe. Separately, an attack on a highway traffic police vehicle in Dera Ismail Khan left one police official martyred and another injured.
