The Punjab government has approved a large electric bus programme aimed at bringing cleaner public transport to tehsil towns across the province. The provincial cabinet cleared the deployment of 1,500 electric buses, and officials say the service is meant to cover 91 tehsils.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar has been given responsibility for putting the project into effect. Official sources say the goal is to give citizens modern, high-quality and eco-friendly transport, and to strengthen the wider public transport system.

How the fleet is to be shared

Under the proposed plan, buses have already been earmarked for several divisions. Multan is to get 169 electric buses for nine tehsils, Sahiwal 87 for four tehsils, Bahawalpur 215 for 11 tehsils, and Dera Ghazi Khan 63 for 10 tehsils.

Further allocations include 202 buses for Faisalabad’s 12 tehsils, 198 for Sargodha’s 14 tehsils, 125 for Gujranwala’s seven tehsils, 122 for Gujrat’s eight tehsils, and 219 for Rawalpindi’s 16 tehsils. Depots are to be set up at the tehsil level so the vehicles can be operated and maintained close to where they run.

When service is due to begin

The electric bus service is scheduled to start in Punjab in January 2027. By June 2027, the province aims to have 3,000 electric buses on the road—double the first batch of 1,500 approved by the cabinet.

A comprehensive plan is to be carried out to launch the service across the 91 tehsils covered by the initiative. Officials have framed the project as both a mobility upgrade and an environmental step, replacing or adding to conventional public transport with battery-powered buses.

What officials say the project is for

According to official sources, the primary aim is to offer citizens modern, high-quality and eco-friendly travel options. The same sources say the electric buses should also help improve Punjab’s public transport network as a whole, especially outside major city corridors where tehsil-level links matter for daily commuting.

Further operational details—such as fares, exact routes and how passengers will board—have not been set out in the material available on the cabinet decision. Those questions are likely to be settled as the Transport Ministry works through the plan before the January 2027 start date.
