New posting approved for New York
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the appointment of Syed Haider Ali Shah as Pakistan's next Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. The senior diplomat is scheduled to take up the role on 31 October. He is currently Pakistan's ambassador to the Netherlands, based in The Hague.
The posting is among Pakistan's most important multilateral assignments. The Permanent Representative leads the country's mission at the world body, speaks for Pakistan in UN debates, and coordinates with other member states on peace and security, development, human rights, and wider cooperation.
Why the change, and what the job involves
The appointment comes after Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad was elevated to Foreign Secretary in Islamabad. Officials present the change as part of efforts to keep Pakistan's engagement with the United Nations strong and to push the country's priorities on major regional and international questions.
In plain terms, a Permanent Representative—often called a Pakistan UN envoy—is the country's top diplomat at UN Headquarters. That person manages day-to-day diplomacy with the Secretariat and with other missions in New York.
Career path of Syed Haider Ali Shah
Syed Haider Ali Shah brings long experience in multilateral diplomacy and international law. Before moving to the Netherlands in March 2025, he served as Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, overseeing the United Nations and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) divisions from November 2022 to February 2025.
He was Pakistan's ambassador to Nepal from 2020 to 2022. From 2016 to 2020 he served as Deputy Head of Mission in New Delhi, including as Acting High Commissioner. Earlier, from 2002 to 2006, he worked at Pakistan's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, covering the General Assembly's Sixth Committee, which mainly deals with legal issues. He joined the Foreign Service in 1998.
What comes next
Shah is due to assume charge in New York on 31 October, leaving his current ambassadorship in The Hague. No further details on the handover in New York or on a successor in the Netherlands were set out in the material available for this report.
