International oil prices rise after further attacks by the Houthis in Saudi Arabia prompted the United States to instruct some diplomats and their family members to leave its missions in the Kingdom.
Energy trading reacted quickly to the regional security developments. Brent crude futures moved up by $1.29, or 1.2 per cent, to reach $110.11 a barrel at 00:34 GMT. At the same time, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 97 cents, or 1 per cent, to trade at $98.12 a barrel. The upward movement reversed modest trends from the previous session, during which Brent had settled with little change on Wednesday and WTI had dropped by 67 cents.
US mission staff ordered to leave
The price increases followed directives issued to American personnel in the Gulf nation. Fresh strikes carried out by the Houthis in Saudi Arabia led Washington to order certain diplomatic staff and their relatives to depart diplomatic posts across the country.
Officials stated that the US State Department is also preparing to withdraw family members of personnel stationed at several other US missions across the wider region as security considerations persist.
