The University of Karachi (KU) has set up a panel to review its examination system in full, following the instruction of the university's vice chancellor, Dr Wasim Qazi. A notification issued on Friday said the panel will look at how the examinations office is organised and how well it performs, including its staffing and internal checks. The university described the exercise as a step toward an examination process that is more open, answerable and efficient, and that relies more on digital tools.
Who is on the committee
The panel will be chaired by Prof Dr Ikram Uddin Ujjan, Vice Chancellor of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences in Jamshoro, who serves as its convener. The other members are Sulaiman Ahmad, director of the regional centre at the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the federal body that regulates universities; Dr Naveed Yousuf, chief executive of an examinations board and an associate professor of practice in education development; and Dr Shah Muneer, associate registrar for admissions, enrolment and degree advisory at IBA Karachi.
Scope of the Karachi University examination audit
The Karachi University examination audit will go through the full cycle, from timetabling and paper setting to marking, result processing, scrutiny and the announcement of outcomes. It also covers the issue of transcripts and degrees and the checking of academic records. Beyond the process itself, the panel will review confidentiality safeguards, data security, record keeping and who is answerable for what, and it will pinpoint slow steps, holdups and repeated tasks.
A central part of the work is a time-bound roadmap for going digital. The university said this roadmap should cover electronic records, automatic result compilation, audit trails, online services for students, tracking of applications and checks on certificates. The panel is also expected to draft SOPs (standard operating procedures), set targets for measuring performance, fix timelines for services, put in place a way to monitor compliance and create a process for handling student complaints.
Report due in 15 working days
The committee has a deadline of 15 working days to hand its findings to the vice chancellor. The report must set out what the panel found, which changes it proposes, what staff and other resources those changes would need, a schedule for carrying them out and the results to expect. The registrar has been asked to help the panel and make sure every office concerned hands over the required files, documents and administrative support.
The university said the review is meant to improve how the institution works and keep procedures sound, while following due process and protecting students' academic interests. The step is one piece of a larger effort to build an exam system at KU that is open, answerable, quick and digital.
