A Multan court on Tuesday granted police three days of physical remand for a suspect accused of killing a 15-year-old boy in a Multan car accident that police are treating as intentional killing. The suspect, who was arrested a day earlier, was presented before Judicial Magistrate Saadia Aslam. Police allege he hit the boy, who had worked for him, with his car.
What the court ordered
Police had asked for 14 days of physical remand so they could question the suspect and complete their investigation. The magistrate instead approved three days. Physical remand means the suspect stays in police custody during questioning, rather than in judicial custody. The decision keeps the suspect with investigators for the period the court has set.
What the footage and the FIR show
CCTV footage of the incident shows the boy running on the road after he spotted a car. The car is seen swerving and chasing him until it hits him, and after he falls he strikes the gate of a nearby house and dies on impact. The case was registered on the state's behalf at Multan's DHA police station, and the first information report (FIR), the formal police record of a complaint, names two suspects. It cites Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which covers intentional murder, and Section 34, which covers acts done by several people with a common intention.
According to the FIR, the boy was being trained as an electrician while working for the suspects. His cousin told police that he had reportedly faced violence and threats from them, and the FIR says the boy was fleeing when the suspects pursued him in a car. These are allegations recorded in the police file and have not been tested in court.
Police say a second suspect is being sought
Multan City Police Officer Akhtar Farooq told reporters that raids were under way to arrest a second suspect. He said, "We all are in deep pain," and described the orphan boy as having been "subjected to barbarity." Police arrested one of the suspects while the other escaped, and the FIR says the vehicle has been taken into custody.
The remand period gives police time to question the arrested suspect and try to trace the second man. No statement from the suspect has been reported, and the next court date has not been announced.
