The prime suspect in the murder of an orphaned teenager in Multan was killed in an alleged encounter with the Crime Control Department (CCD) near Bahawalpur, police confirmed. Tauqeer Nazir was accused of pursuing and intentionally running over Waseem Abbas with a motor vehicle.

According to CCD District Officer Irfan Akbar, police personnel attempted to intercept two men on a motorcycle near the Northern Bypass in Bahawalpur. The suspects opened fire on the police party while attempting to evade capture, triggering a gunfight. CCD officials reported that Tauqeer was fatally shot by bullets fired by his own fleeing associate, who escaped the scene.

Escape from police remand

Tauqeer had recently been placed on a four-day physical remand by a judicial magistrate in Multan for interrogation. During his court appearance prior to the incident, he was reportedly assaulted by lawyers on the premises.

Authorities have not provided details explaining how Tauqeer managed to escape police custody while under remand or how he traveled from Multan to Bahawalpur. Official statements regarding the exact time and mechanism of his escape remain pending.

Background of the murder case

The deceased teenager, Waseem Abbas, lived at an NGO-run orphanage before being placed as an apprentice electrician with Tauqeer. Police stated the boy attempted to leave the workplace due to alleged mistreatment. CCTV footage showed Waseem running along a street inside Multan's Royal Orchard housing society before a car struck him.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated earlier that Tauqeer and an associate allegedly chased the teenager for nearly a kilometer before running him over. Police registered a murder case under Sections 302 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code, adding that initial inquiries found no evidence supporting claims that the teenager had engaged in theft.
