Seven members of the same family were killed and seven others injured in a Murree road accident today after their vehicle plunged into a ravine and caught fire on Rakhala Road, rescue officials said.

What happened on Rakhala Road

According to rescue officials, the vehicle fell into a ravine and then caught fire. Seven people died after suffering severe burns. The other seven were hurt with burn injuries. Officials have not publicly detailed in these accounts what caused the vehicle to leave the road.

The crash took place on Rakhala Road in Murree, a busy hill route used by families travelling between the plains and the resort town.

Who was travelling

Rescue officials said 14 people were in the vehicle, including children, elderly people and women. All were from the same family. They were returning from a wedding ceremony when the Murree road accident today occurred.

The death toll and the injury count are equal: seven killed and seven wounded. Both groups were affected by fire after the fall into the ravine.

Earlier fire on Murree Expressway

The latest crash comes months after a separate tragedy in June 2026, when a passenger van carrying tourists caught fire near Kahjoot on the Murree Expressway. In that incident, 10 people were killed and eight others were injured.

Murree District Police Officer Dr Muhammad Raza had said that van lost control because of overspeeding and struck a roadside safety barrier. The impact burst the fuel tank, he said, and leaking petrol set the vehicle alight within seconds. He said the force was so severe that passengers inside did not get a chance to escape. Authorities said the eight injured from that June crash were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for treatment.

Those details relate to the June Expressway fire, not to the Rakhala Road family crash. Officials have not, in the available accounts, given a matching cause statement for the latest Murree road incident today.
