Oil & Gas Development Company Ltd (OGDCL) has begun producing from the Bitrism East-1 exploration well in Khairpur, Sindh, marking a new step in OGDCL Khairpur oil gas production. The company disclosed the start in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Thursday. At the time, the well was producing 7.0 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas and 200 barrels per day of condensate, a light liquid hydrocarbon that comes out of gas wells alongside the gas.

From the well to the plant

OGDCL said it laid an approximately 28-kilometre flowline, 8 inches wide, using its own resources to connect the well to the Sinjhoro plant for processing. The processed gas is now being supplied to the SSGCL network, which the company said adds to indigenous gas supplies. The output comes from the Basal Sands of the Lower Goru Formation, a subsurface rock layer that the company has targeted for production.

Ownership and company background

OGDCL is the operator of the Bitrism Exploration Licence, holding a 77.5% working interest, which is its share of costs and output. The remaining 22.5% is held by Government Holdings (Pvt) Ltd in a joint venture. OGDCL was incorporated on 23 October 1997 under the Companies Ordinance, 1984, to take over exploration and production work formerly done by the Oil and Gas Development Corporation, set up in 1961.

What happens next

The company said production will be ramped up progressively as the well flow stabilises. The notice did not give a final output level for Bitrism East-1 or a timeline for reaching it. OGDCL said the start of output reflects its focus on turning discoveries into production and supporting domestic energy supplies.
