A two-month vocational training programme has been launched in Islamabad to prepare 100 Pakistani workers for jobs on Chinese-invested projects inside the country. Organisers say successful trainees will be assessed and given priority for employment on relevant projects, including those of PowerChina.
Who is running the course
Kasb-i-Kamal Vocational Centre is organising the programme with CIIC and local technical training institution KEK. Of the 100 places, 50 candidates will train in low-voltage electrical work and 50 in riveting. The course is also meant to help young Pakistanis build marketable skills, find better work and raise their incomes while staying employed at home.
At the inaugural ceremony, CIIC Technology Group general manager Wang Kang and Huang Ju, director of the international business development department, said the training would include Chinese-language instruction and workplace safety. They said the aim was to strengthen local technical skills and create jobs while helping Chinese firms meet their workforce needs.
Chinese firms taking part
Representatives of five Chinese state-owned enterprises operating in Pakistan are participating. They include PowerChina, China Electrical Equipment, Harbin Electric International, China Nuclear Industry Fifth Construction Company and China MCC Group.
The CIIC chairman said the organisation trained 25 welders in Pakistan last year, and three of them later found work on PowerChina projects. He said partner organisations had been satisfied with the skills and performance of Pakistani workers. He also urged Chinese enterprises to deepen ties with local partners and build a joined-up system covering recruitment, training, certification and employment.
What organisers say comes next
Kasb-i-Kamal chief executive Ahmed Younis said the centre, working with CIIC, had already trained 14 electrical engineers. He argued that skilled human resources were essential for national progress and that training young people in modern technical fields would help strengthen the economy.
Trainees who pass assessment are to be prioritised for openings linked to the participating companies’ projects. How many of this new batch will be hired, and on which sites, will depend on that assessment and on the firms’ hiring needs after the two-month course ends.
